THE
RESULTS ARE IN! |
The
Delegates representing the 6th District of
the IAFF assembled this week in Boston
Massachusetts at the 47th IAFF biennial convention.
In an overwhelming show of solidarity they
elected Lorne West as the next IAFF 6th
District Vice President, to represent
Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia
and the Territories in the first ballot. The
first ballot success for Lorne is no
reflection on the other candidates, which
collectively are some of the greatest
leaders in their own right to ever come
from the 6th District. The
6th District instead chose to solidify
through our election rather than divide,
and is a strong signal to the rest of the
IAFF that the 6th District is as strong as
ever, and ready for the future! It
was a team success in everyway.
There can never be success without a
strong team, and Lorne was very fortunate
to have such a strong team of supporters working
hard on his behalf everyday throughout the
campaign. His own IAFF Local, 1271
and their union officers worked tirelessly
to assist in making this success a
reality!

With
three candidates from British Columbia,
the largest region in the 6th District
at almost 3,400 members and one from
Saskatchewan, the smallest provincial
region with almost 700 members it appears
that Alberta may hold the key to any
candidate claiming victory with more
than 2,500 of the 6,500 plus votes at
stake in the 6th District. However,
with almost four months to go, it still
isn’t too late for yet more candidates
to enter the race. Click

AND
WHAT A TEAM IT WAS! |
|
It
was an amazing day at convention, all
the elements of great team
success came together. Strong leadership
was evident at every turn.
Calgary, Local 255 President Scott
Wilcox the first to push Lorne and
bring the momentum to the table, was
followed up by the great leadership of
Edmonton Local 209 President Ken Block
in truly bringing our District together.
Welcome Back Edmonton, Local 209!
Even
the smallest Local in attendance
from our District made
a significant difference in the
outcome. Terry Peters, President
of Local 1298 Powell River and his 12
members, have always been strong
supporters of Lorne's work and made a
critical difference in the outcome
this week.
There
were so many others that played
a role, too many to mention here,
but they should feel confident
we know who they are.The
6th District has had a legacy of great
leaders, and Lorne will have some big
shoes to fill, following Terry
Ritchie, and before him Bill Copeland,
Gordon Anderson and Hector Wright who
organized Lorne's IAFF Local, 1271-
Surrey in 1957.Local
1271 and their leaders, Larry Thomas,
Mike Starchuk, Jon Caviglia and Terry
Hunt, provided their quiet and
strong leadership throughout the
campaign, their Local will continue to
be represented well, when Lorne announces his resignation as Local
President at their next regular
membership meeting September 3.
Local
1271 is well served by these leaders
and we look for them to continue
to push the envelope in the District!
