REVISED ALBERTA HEALTH AND SAFETY RULES NOW IN EFFECT

Alberta’s new Occupational Health and Safety Code, which replaces 11 regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, came into effect on April 30, 2004 . The Code includes a number of newly enacted provisions, including requirements aimed at minimizing the danger from workplace violence, providing biohazard protection, incorporating specific standards for safe lifting, and addressing the use of robots in the workplace. In addition, the legislation requires that all employers prepare a written hazard assessment, and advise employees of any hazards in the workplace. The Code was enacted last year following a review of the existing regulations by the Minister’s Council on Workplace Safety.
